La Calle San Sebastian

Located in the northern sector just south of  La Plaza del Quinto Centenario  and Iglesia San Jose, this is one of Old San Juan's most famous boulevards. It is a major venue for local celebrations, including the annual Saint Sebastian's Festival (January 20th), the Puerto Rican equivalent of Mardi Gras. This is a classical colonial street. It is a must-see for visitors and the thoroughfare where one can find the famous Hijos de Borinquen bar and the well-known El Patio de Sam and Amadeus Café.

In January 2006 this festival was added to the Guinnes World Records Book for hosting the largest gathering of "pleneros" (Plena music performers). There are arts and crafts exhibits as well as samplings of local and regional Caribbean dishes and exotic drinks to be enjoyed with the music and dancing. The streets of Old San Juan overflow with people from all over the world who come to attend this colorful event.
